My Godfather and my son’s namesake, Whit Bailey, from the Charleston S.C area would be proud of these potatoes. I once watched him sell a whole semi truck load of potatoes directly to Lays Potato Chips for chip making. The buyer came into the kitchen and brought his fryer. He made up a batch of fresh made potato chips right there and then bought the truck load.

Yum, This is a photo of the harvest from the first New Potatoes of the year from our Home Garden here in Freeland, Whidbey Island. They were so tender, but stayed together on the plate, so buttery. I planted them from some scavanged potatoes from my new plot at the Pea Patch community garden at Greenbank Farm. It was my first year in that plot this year and I found some of last years potatoes when I turned it. I wasn’t too enthusiastic about planting these as a second year seed, but just wanted to plant a few potatoes on St Patty’s Day and my new seed hadn’t arrived. This bowl of potatoes is from two of the 4 potatoes I planted that day. There are another 100 feet of potatoes left in my two plots.
Last night for dinner we ate half of these along with some sauteed collards and Kale from the garden,,,, oh yes, with some onion added.
NAR has released it’s pending home sales index for April 2012 and the numbers show a small dip from the previous month but closings remain strong on a year-over-year basis.

We’ve had plenty of rain this year but some dry spells as well, so the garden is coming along well except for the tons of grass in the isles. The potatoes are up I planted 10 days ago and some of my transplants are visible. Lettuce and Chard are winter over’s. Used row cover on the lettuce and had 16 planted in the cold frame on the rt. They were Transplanted Dec 2 and waited to grow, but are sweet and tender now. The ones that wintered under row cover are not quite as tender. Oh yes, peas are finally up and some new chard have just broken through. That’s chives front and center and garlic on the left in two different types and plantings. Beans will go in the ground in a week or so and I have two flats of tomatoes re potted in 4 ” pots to go in the ground soon. One flat is Peace vine cherry tomatoes, which did great last year. The other flatis Oregon Spring Tomatoes, which do pretty well.
